Youth Oasis Support LGBTQ Youth Mental Health
Baton Rouge - As school starts for many youth, this month, we are mindful that for LGBTQ+ /Queer youth it can be challenging time for mental health. Youth Oasis will provide mental health resources on our social media and a list of the LGBTQ+ Student organizations at high schools and colleges in the Baton Rouge region.
Providing safe spaces for LGBTQ+ youth through student organizations at schools gives more than a social space to connect, oftentimes, it is the only source of affirmation and escape, which helps with their mental health and can overall improve learning in the classroom. According, to The Trevor Project, 94 percent of LGBTQ+ youth reported that anti-trans legislation negatively impacted their mental health. Plus, 42 percent of LGBTQ+ youth—and 52 percent of trans youth—said they seriously considered suicide. These numbers indicate that queer youth are in a mental health crisis and the importance of more welcoming school staff and LGBTQ+ programs centering on mental health resources.
Youth Oasis Communications and Outreach Specialist, Timeless Tate understands the urgency for better LGBTQ mental health resources in the community “Our LGBTQ+ youth are suffering and encountering different barriers daily basis, especially since the pandemic and the recent anti-trans legislation affecting LGBTQ+ communities. It is time for schools to have welcoming staff, progressive programming, and organizations to help queer youth, especially for trans youth of color in low-income areas. All schools need LGBTQ+ student clubs and support services.”
We believe in community support and it takes a village to help youth! Donations and funding to support Youth Oasis will be greatly appreciated.
