Youth Oasis launches Summer of PRIDE for the LGBTQ+ Community
Baton Rouge- All summer long, Youth Oasis will have films and discussions centering LGBTQ+ communities. Starting June 26 at Unitarian Church of Baton Rouge, we will screen the film entitled Shelter, at 3:00pm. On July 11at 6:00 pm, at the Out of the Box LGBTQ+ Center, we will screen the POV/PBS film entitled Pier Kids, this event is a collaboration with POV, PBS' award-winning nonfiction film series. Both films are open to the public for learning and discussions, while within the organization staff and youth are having LGBTQ+ training and activities, especially in our relaunching of Diversity House, a safe space housing site for our LGBTQ+ youth.
During PRIDE month of June, across the nation, many organizations are showcasing and supporting LGBTQ+ advocacy, resources, and events. This is essential due to the high rates of marginalization within LGBTQ communities in addition to discrimination, homelessness, lack of sex education, lack of access to sexual health resources and violence, especially for black and brown LGBTQ+ communities. Despite these challenges, Pride month gives us all a chance to celebrate ourselves and the trailblazing journeys of the many pioneering LGBTQ+ leaders and public figures who have paved the way for true Queer liberation.
Timeless Tate, the Outreach and Communications Specialist at Youth Oasis, whose an avid advocate for LGBTQ+ communities knows firsthand the importance of advocacy and education “Oftentimes media and corporations aren’t focusing on LGBTQ+ community wellness and liberation. This is the time not only where celebrations happen, but finally LGBTQ+ voices can be heard about the many challenges and traumas we face all year long, even decades of harm, which can create resources and help enrich the lives of LGBTQ youth.”
We believe in community support and it takes a village to help youth! Donations and funding to support Youth Oasis will be greatly appreciated.
